A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Nadhim Zahawi, who looks kind of like a more ethnic John Malkovich in that photo, would be entertaining to us outside the UK. He looks like a Bond villain…

It says a lot that when you look further into what they are standing on the only real conservatives there are non-white women. All the others are just various degrees of lib dem busy arguing how spinny a dress a guy needs to wear before he can walk into the women's locker room.

Eveyone ready for a high tax, low spend government? Hope you didn't like having money to spend or non-crumbling infrastructure.

A psychic pig is apparently backing Suella Braverman

Honestly of all the options Suella would be a pretty good one. Pity the party will never pick her and will give the membership the choice between 2 awful options.

It would be hilarious though if the cons elected a woman of Indian origin (born in the UK, parents are immigrants) to be leader and PM. So tell me Labour how come your leader is always a white male despite all your diversity rambling.

From the article

Lorraine Kelly's psychic guest on her ITV show sparked a frenzy after predicting that Boris Johnson would resign from his position as Prime Minister after dozens of ministers resigned.

I must be super psychic because my respons to my wife telling me about Rishi and Javeed resigning was "well Boris is finished". Didn't even need to wait for dozens to go.

Here's the supporter total so far. They need 20 by end of day today to get on the ballot for the first round of MP voting.

It's almost certainly Rishi vs another going to the member vote.

Just shows how out of touch they are. When the vote is opened up to all party members,no one is going to vote for Rishi.

At first glance at the posts above I'd choose Tugendhat. Have to admit don't know much about him though. Second choice, Liz Truss - purely for meme potential.

He's an ex soldier so has that going for him but he's definitely on the side of a more lefty ecconomic structure.

I wand Suella or Kemi but they're both too spicy for current British politics.

Suella being an Indian origin lawyer who thinks the whole human rights and NGO meddling has gone far too far.

SmartSelect_20220712-154731_Brave.jpg

Kemi is of Nigerian origin and thinks government has got far too big and involved in everyone's lives and isn't big on the whole lqbt thing (what a surprise for a Nigerian right?).

I'm firmly in the "not Rishi" camp and being a member I get a vote so that's one for whoever is running against him.

It's pretty much conservative party policy they must give a choice between thw worst two options to the membership, that's how we ended up with Prime Minister May.

Rishi vs Javid it is.
Javid has been pretty good at health, though. I don't think he'll be in the running anyway, not this time around. Not enough support.

It would be nice if more of them would assert that they're going to dump the net zero bullshit. It's crippling the country.

Problem was he was a bit too free with the check book so yes he delivered, you can deliver anything if you have the money, but that free with the spending is basically what drove the NI hike.

Problem is that's herrasy these days, no way you can even get that policy through even if you pledge it.

The nhs woukd be 100% better if they just fired all the middle management.

Then make gettig a nursing degree free. In a few years, there will be plenty of homegrown nurses. Of course, only someone who genuinely cared for the people would do that. So no living English politician.

Shapes has withdrawn and is now backing Rishi.

Then make gettig a nursing degree free.

I mean it is paid for by the NHS for doctors and dentists so they just need to expand that programme.

Problem is, much like teachers, they are low paying sucky jobs that scrape the bottom of the barrel because those who fly through get into industry to make bank. There is a reason the only teachers I know are those who scraped a 3rd while we were at uni.

Agreed. On top of the efficiency and cost issues, there's a lot of unacknowlecdged profiteering that goes in within the management structure of the NHS. Lots of mid- and senior managers who get to go on all expenses luxury holidays industry conferences, paid for by pharmaceutical companies, after which they just happen to highly recommend the use of all the company's products in the their trust (or across the entire NHS, if they're high enough). It's all so very cosy.

i know this from personal experience: aunt is an nhs pencil pusher and is paid far too well. if anything cutting nhs funding is a good thing if it gets these lazy middle managers out

Unfortunately, they will use it as an excuse to fire all the front line staff instead. Then say "Look, the NHS is shit, we should sell it". Also using foreign nurses really helps their immigration plans...they will have them working for shitty underpaid agencies that those politicians probably have shares in.

Fuck that jug-earred, 5'2 indian. He's a poser and would fit right in with labour.

I'd love to see Kemi or Suella. I don't care about their skin colour. They're die-hard conservatives and just the battering ram the right needs to drive the left and the professional activists back into the box from whence they were sprung.

It won't be Sunak. Odds are determined by bets placed, and as he has the highest profile, of course every simpleton out there is betting on him. People forget that Thatcher came out of no where and ended up dominating British politics for decades.

I'd have Truss in. People joke about that "That is a disgrace" meme, but have you seen the price of cod lately? We should start another cod war now and tell them we aren't in the EU and to fuck off our fish. I want cheap fish and chips again. It's our national fucking dish (don't say it. Do not say tikka masala).

The fishing industry has been shafted for decades. It would be a great industry to revitalise.

Javid's out, for what it's worth.

The back-stabby briefing is coming out for Sunak. Best way to tell people something is true is to deny out of nowhere.

Sunak is not 'hated' among Tory MPs - David Davis

Former Cabinet minister David Davis, who is backing Penny Mordaunt, has denied that leadership candidate Rishi Sunak is "hated" by many Tory MPs.
Earlier, Davis told BBC Radio 4's PM programme: "I don't think he's hated at all.
"We need a change of policy.
"If Rishi's going to stick with this policy, which has landed us with a recession and higher-than-average inflation for our economic peers, then I want to change that".
He called the former chancellor a "perfectly charming, nice individual".

Once again them not being in touch with the common man. Completely unneeded hatchet job. The whole country hates him.
