A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

So how do we force consequences for them acting badly?

If they have broken the law, then a criminal prosecution. That would of course be based on the assumption the leader of the CPS has the balls to do it ( previous owners of this post have proven somewhat lacking, especially when dealing with pedophiles ).
Otherwise all the usual suspects should hold unethical actions to account - the press, the house, members of the opposition parties and public opinion. Somehow much of this accountability has eroded in the real world.
Ultimately I think there is now a culture of "I can do what I want when no-one is looking - it is only wrong if I get caught". There used to be a question regarding this type of honesty when I was training as a professional rugby player. The cheat doesn't hit the line when his teammates aren't there, he doesn't lift the full set, doesn't do the final sprint. In those instances it isn't just the individual letting themself down, worse they let their team and fans down.
This is the same with the politician that cheats - they don't just let themselves, their family and their party down, they let the public down too - all of us that pay taxes and invest in the system.

Asylum seekers etc are here legally, as are the vast majority of other immigrants, as when you turn up and say ‘HALP PLS’ the government beams and says ‘of course!’. People doing cash in hand work will still do cash in hand work. They’ll just leave their mobile phone at home so they can’t be tracked.

What this digital ID really is is a lazy version of surveillance. Before digital tracking, the powers that be had to send real, live people out to watch people for days and weeks on end, to try to catch the general population doing something they shouldn’t be. If this ID app shit is what I think it is, it’ll monitor your bank account, what you spend money on and where, and where you travel too (as well as whether you say mean things about the government online, which we all know should mean benefits stopped, police interviews and maybe even time inside). Most government departments are a shambles, but the moment they can all start talking to each other and comparing notes, especially in real time, everyone will begin to look suspicious to them. Bonus points for paranoia when the system gets repeatedly hacked, and who knows what information has been changed.

The various government departments struggle with the IT systems they already have. Adding the entirety of the country’s population to it and making it privacy critical will absolutely go without a hitch, I’m sure.

When you start focusing on crime clearance statistics over the actual solving of crimes, it just becomes human nature to focus the path of least resistance.

Urgh. Metrics. Now, don’t get me wrong, data is useful. Data can show you all sorts of things and allow you to monitor certain aspects of progress.
The problem is that the people who set up the targets are idiots. The target becomes the thing in and of itself while rhe original aim goes by the wayside.
An example: ‘we need fewer c sections.’
Problem: c sections are expensive and overall when unnecessary less good for the baby than a natural birth.
Metrics wonk thinks: we must have fewer c sections and then they just go on that metric. You’ve had too many this month, deny the next few. So you end up with a culture of denial for the edge cases, who h results in injured and dead babies, and injured mothers, but your metric is great! Success!
An actual solution would be to see why numbers are high and then try to reduce rhe factors that end up in a non-needed section. Things like maternal ill health or obesity for example. Forcing rhe metric is stupid.
I see this done constantly. Diversity quotas for example. We must have more category x in stem. Ok well are you going I to schools and making sure category x want to and are studying so you’ve got a pool of good applicants? No you just promote them because woman:gay/ethnic. Standard drops but rhe metric is great!

Is everyone being hyperbole, or am I lucky that the Royal Mail actually does their job in my county? In the past five years I've had one package go missing and that was the sender's fault.

I have two experiences with royal mail. On one hand the drivers are too fucking retarded to understand how to use a doorbell and will routinely just leave parcels outside because I didn't realise the noises that sounded like the boiler or just general outside noise was actually someone knocking on the door. Not only that but they are fucking incapable of thought, they could leave the parcel behind the car so it's not visible from the pavement but those extra few steps is too much for them so they instead leave the fucking thing right in front of the door where everyone can see. Or they can get a parcel to the other side of the planet in literally 4 fucking days somehow despite not paying for any expedited shipping. The post office though? They refuse to do certain royal mail services, rm said it would cost me idk let's just call it £50, I go to the post office and they said that option didn't exist and my only choices were splitting the parcel in half and that would cost £60 for each half and had a delivery date of several months, or I pay for extra special expedited shipping that would get it there in a few days and that was my only choice, oh yea and would also cost £250.

You know how america has police and swat right? Our swat is your police. We have police, the people you would see everywhere, then we have firearms police which are the ones in London and also on call to fill out what you would call a swat call. They're inept and underequipped to deal with the problems they face, but that's just because there's nowhere near enough of them to deal with the hordes of knife crime. If anything the average cop is stronger in England than america just because they have to be. American police tend to default to guns, ours can't. Just for reference, there were 6200 uses of a firearm in policing in 2023. That includes say 10 firearms police called to check something but 0 shots fired, that's 10 uses of firearms. There were roughly a million uses of force overall, that includes shit like restraining people (including handcuffs for some reason) and unholstering any weapon. Also because I'm already looking at the numbers, black people? almost 50% more likely to be involved in a firearms use. Asians (they mean indians) are too. The average use of force is around 75% against a white person. Firearms uses against white people drops to 55%.

I've said this before, but there is a certain pride that you take, I don't know the word but maybe validation. Summers are a fucking cunt with how hot they've been over the past few years, winters are well some of the wettest parts of europe. It's not fun, it's not enjoyable. Palantir have gone down in the Big Bad index after their clusterfuck with the NHS. Most hospitals won't touch their software with a tramp's dick. 35,000 times in 2023 (including other non lethal like rubber bullets). Though it is worded as if a single taser is used more than once it is only counted once, more of a times unholstered count than a times used count. For comparison non trained equipment was used 40,000 times, things like batons or pepper spray. Our police do not have a choice, if there is a man with a knife it almost always ends in a taser deployment because it cannot be resolved with less and they do not have access to more.
