OK, so before I get into today's Brianna Wu Article update, I want to point out something I noticed. Wu claims to have been playing video games since she got an NES in 1985. She claims a complete lack of playable female characters, but Samus Aran was playable in 1986, and Wu never fucking mentions her. Similarly, yes,
Super Mario Bros.,
Donkey Kong,
Legend of Zelda, and
Kung Fu all had a woman you had to rescue, fact is, this was when the NES first got started! Half of the NES's early library was fucking arcade ports -
Mario Bros and
Duck Hunt,
Joust and fucking
Donkey Kong Junior,
Balloon Fight and
Ice Climbers (another game with a playable female).
I noticed this during research for the Wu Article, but Wu will outright claim that even in the 1980s when Video Games were young, they were inherently sexist, inherently
problematic, inherently misogynistic. It's a load of fucking bullshit. Not only does Samus give that the fucking finger, but this was when your average game couldn't
fit a fucking plot. Wu makes the argument that games have
always been a men-only hobby, but that's a load of shit and anyone who grew up in my generation (which is also Wu's generation) knows it's a load of shit. I grew up playing vidya with my female cousins, with the girl down the street, with the kids in my afterschool program.
You
all fucking know it, and you've all seen it in your own lives, whether its your gran playing
Tetris or your Sister enjoying
Pokemon.
Anyway. I did a massive battery of updates to the
Wu Article and
its corresponding Sub-Article. Check 'em out when you get a chance.
