What happened to Digg?

Digg is a cautionary tale. It was noted for essentially being a primitive form of Reddit when it launched, and with much the same purpose, being a content-generating aggregate news site analogous to Reddit as we know it. However, Digg had some serious issues. Whilst it caught on like wildfire, many of the problems we now conflate with Reddit could be seen on Digg, including constant brigading of topics and open agenda-pushing. Throw in a little economic malfeasance and you have where the transparencies to modern Reddit end.

As an aggregate news site, Digg was quite popular, but with a mod staff that was openly biased and a userbase that not only was deeply, outright entrenched in echo-chambering itself, but which was extremely xenophobic and intolerant. Light ribbing on a topic could get one banned and the site became legendary for the odious practice of having small groups of users manipulate the aggregate statistics to attempt to bury articles they didn't like - such as ones that promoted Ron Paul during the lead-up to the 2008 elections. All of this could have been avoided if, like Reddit, there was transparency in voting, but as things stood, it wasn't in the cards. It caught more flak later when Digg essentially was revealed to be selling upvotes to major sites and companies. When Digg finally began to essentially capitulate to corporate interests, however - much as Reddit is currently doing - that is when the exodus began.

On August 25th, 2010, Digg rolled out the new update, which had countless little changes specifically designed to appeal to Digg's corporate sponsors. This was literally days after Digg had caught considerable criticism for removing content covering how Blu-Rays were encoded, and Digg, operating under orders from its lawyers, did away with it, getting its userbase up in arms. The ongoing campaign of Digg refusing to fix problems, giving way too much power to people who used it to troll, and essentially selling out its userbase led to the inevitable when a new site - Reddit - became available. Digg's userbase abandoned the site in droves, and Reddit exploded in size, having prevaricated itself on user freedom and stability. Digg would lose roughly 80% of its userbase within the first six months.

My "IRL" friends think that I'm nuts when I sperg about how the Internet of fifteen years ago is not the Internet of today, and I feel completely vindicated in knowing that I'm not the only one around who sees what's going on. Semper Fidelis, guys.

IB Null sells the Farms to Vade

I know your pain.

I was practically raised on the internet of the early noughties. That climate will be dearly missed.

I hate how weak and sensitive everything is nowadays.

I mean, it's probably got a lot to do with how I am, but this stuff with safe spaces and trigger warnings and fuckin' skin color quotas seems to be something of a step backward socially. Aren't we supposed to try and learn to understand each other? Or at least tolerate those that have different beliefs than ours? Instead the trend seems to be toward baby-proofing the planet. As if it's bad to feel anything but comfortable.

A personal example of tolerance: I am an atheist. I live with Christians. We get along just fine! We understand that we each have our own beliefs and we don't bother each other about them. Why can't SJWs do even a fraction of that, and let a dissenting opinion exist on the Internet? It baffles me.
Though what confuses me more are the causes they support. Wu is ranting about some of them too. The 'women in tech' stuff, and the 'okay gays can get married now what about trans people' thing. Do they not realize how frivolous and minute those problems are in comparison to the big picture? Like, there are entire countries dying, and you want the world to look at YOU and the literal less than 1% of your trans friends.

What people like Wu don't get is that they are one person out of billions. And, no matter how big of a fit they throw, they are worth the same as every other human on the planet. Which means if they end up with an issue that effects very few people, they can not expect the world to cater to them. No. The outliers adapt to the norm. If an issue is addressed, be fuckin' thankful that society saw fit to make a change that gives you a chance to have a more normal life. (Like stuff for left-handed people. We aren't even that small of a minority, and we still have to either adapt or special order shit.)

TL;DR: Bitches whine too much. They should shut up and be grateful they were able to go to school to learn how to spell 'trans' without the worry of being shot in the head.

1. LWu please, we all know it was your "Beata Anita" who sent you the letter detailing how to become a victim.

2. "I'd suggest that unconsciously you know..."? what?

>makes a horrible game
>knows how to produce hits out of existing franchises
But it pains me to see how these people are demanding tools, to make the production of games easier. Is like they don't want to put any effort whatsoever. They make a terrible game and then think they are allowed to say vulgarities like this.

Oh and if it sells bad is because, the audience needs to "grow up" or "my art is too sophisticated".

Did Wu even watch 24? It was basically shameless torture porn. To "do it right" you'd have to have torture mechanics. It was just not the height of enlightened political discourse or any shit and turning it into a shooter is entirely what you do to media like that. Fuck, even GTA, a franchise where you're almost encouraged to go around murdering people just for fun, had more critical thinking in it about the subject of torture.

Didn't take long for her to link to her Patreon...I find hilarious how the only proof of "unpaid work" I see is the stupid effort you put in your twitter account.

And in GTA 5 Trever, who is pretty much considered to be the most violent and mentally unstable protagonist in the series, actually mentions that torture is basically just for sick fucks who want to watch other people suffer and is actually appalled at the idea of the government using it. So yeah seeing Wu go on and on about how emotionally driven 24 is when it's almost as bad as the saw series for being torture porn while constantly saying shit about games like GTA for focusing on violence and not enough emotion is kinda funny when you consider that.

I think maybe she wants a Telltale style game for it. That'd work out great. "Press X to shove the towel down the undefined russian/arab/chinese terrorists throat." Then again, I could almost maybe see some sort of Heavy Rain style game working but-- I'd be bored pretty quick by a 24 game where I'm not able to actually be Jack "I shoot everyone and growl" Bauer.

I dunno what other sort of game you could really make if it wasn't a shooter or at the very least a 3rd person adventure shooter. A 2d pokemon style game? A point and click?

EDIT: Look Wu I know you probably lurk here, you dont have to post here but christ elaborate on this, because I'm at a loss. You're handed 24 and told to make the perfect game, what's the mechanics, how do you advance, whats the story, what's Jack's arc--- c'mon design a game for us.

Eh, I bet she just likes 24 because Yvonne Strahovski was in the most recent season.

"Players"? What's that, a new term invented because how the term "Gamer" is toxic? What happens if that term is toxic as well thanks to you lol?

And no mention of her work as a game developer. If I were one of her fictitious employees, I would start job hunting immediately.

I'm going to make a wild guess it would somehow involve stick-insect looking Bratz dolls with anorexia.

So is Wu saying that she's now "working" more than 80 hours a week? Does work include seeing movies multiple times in one week, playing DDR at Dave & Busters, and tweeting about Destiny nonstop?

Wu couldn't give enough shits to ask those sorts of questions when developing her game. She's not going to do it for Kim Bauer's Exotic Cougar Adventures.
