Your Rifle: $1,000-$1,500 chrome lined barrel AR-15 chambered in 5.56/.223Wylde
The AR-15 in the year of our lord 2025 is the most reliable, tested, combat proven, and logistically supported firearm in the history of man, even beating out the Brown Bess and probably the fucking spear. If it breaks, you can fix it, if not they are all very well warrantied. There is no other gun with as much information and knowledge posted about it. Nothing can match its reliability while delivering on profile, weight, and performance.
The AR-15 is illegal in Canukistan. What would you recommed as an alternative here?

Gobbless your soul. My current understanding is Canada has rifles banned by name. Luckily for you, the Robinson XCR is (according to google AI) legal and pretty good. Prepare to over pay for 5.56 semi auto. I do not own one, but know an Alaskan that swears by it (and owns 2!). The XCR has a pretty active forum that you can lean on for technical details and support.

Looks like its illegal too. Any other suggestions?
I would also like to know what you think of the SKS though. Since I can buy one for a decent price here. That and a mossberg. Other than that idk what I can really buy in the realm of semi auto rifles.

Born to die. AI is a fuck. 410,000,000,000 dead silicone valley jeets.

SKS is... a viable last resort. Can we do Mini-14? Such a painful thing to ask.

I have found some other "alternatives" like the WK180-C, which seems to be ok?
I won't be able to judge it any better then you sadly not having any hands on or experienced friends to lean on. It looks... fine?

The portion I wrote about Glocks and why I recommend them didn't come down to them being the best pistols, but rather that they are very good pistols that also have an enormous amount of knowledge and material infrastructure in place to sustain and maintain them. It seems to me that in order to get that sort of behind the scenes advantage in your country, you will need to use an SKS, which is... a compromise on capability.

I'm a bit torn between suggesting you go the route of obscure 5.56 modern semi-auto with the profile needed to keep up with an AR or telling you to get an SKS and having a rock of logistics to lean on. If you are patient with me I can consult some people and get back to you. Reach out to @Club Sandwich and try to pick his brain some before buying is the best I can leave you with right now.

First you have my sympathies, Canada would be so much cooler and I would visit more if your government didn't suck.

Second something to keep in mind is that unlike the US you do not have a right to bear arms or defend yourself. This means you are at the mercy of your retarded government for not pulling the rug out from under you. Things that might be legal today might not be tomorrow and "militia" like gear is going to be fround upon.

For rifles I think I have a couple options for you.

The best would be some brand of " I can't believe it's not ar-18" but keep in mind these are the most likely to be added to a ban list. You mentioned the sks and they are cool but not having any good way of mounting modern optics is an issue. If there is a way it might not be a bad option. I think this is it though for actual modern semi autos.

Next we have ar-15 like pump guns. Apparently they have no magazine restrictions so that's a plus. I don’t know if its illegal though to possess standard ar mags when you also have a semi auto that will take them (you could also get some to keep under the floor boards). Next would be hunting styled mag fed semi autos. The browning bar mk3 might be a good choice here. Keep in mind if you are losing semi auto or a large magazine consider moving up to .308 because you don't really have the advantages of an intermediate cartridge anymore.

Last are bolt actions specifically long range precision rifles. If you can't shoot fast you might as well shoot accurately from far away. Try and take up hunting an long range shooting competitions.

Good luck man also double check anything about legalities and try to get connected with some other gun loving Canuks I'm sure they'll have great advice.

I feel like the whole Canadian training regime should be based around scout rifles and magnified optics. I just don't have a traing base to really advise on the specifics of how to go about that.

I imagine the Canadian civilian fighting doctrine would be pretty similar to places like Finland - very defensive and guerilla style.

This is also one of my weakest areas so I can't offer much advice but something that you should look into are .22LR trainers.

.308 and .22LR have very similar ballistics but different scales - something like 4:1. Depending on your budget you can also get exact clones of a rifle in .308 and .22LR. I've been eyeballing Bergara's B-14 and B-14R but they aren't the only company that does it.

This doesn't quite double your costs but it may be something to consider if one of your realities is limited access to a place to shoot long range. Competition shooting like the NRL22 league don't shoot at ranges longer than 100 yards but they're shooting at targets as small as 1/4".

I'm not sure if the VZ-58 is legal up there, but if so, you might wanna check that out. I'm pretty happy with mine, and if we're already in "get an sks"-territory, it's worth considering.

Meanwhile, TMKs fired from an 11.5" barrel are going to be moving at 2100-2200fps, 500fps over the required velocity for full expansion! Combined with the heavier round, we are actually gaining range and accuracy by optimizing our bullet instead of our barrel, at the cost of having to have a more severe bullet drop to compensate. Now we are aiming a foot over their heads instead of a few inches for a low probability hit, not ideal. But, we are operating as a team (always bring friends to a gunfight), so our carbine allows us to effectively suppress while we get force multipliers (like an SPR or DMR) to start taking accurate shots.
Well that is quite impressive, I might get some of those for myself. And for home defense, range isn't gonna be big factor (unless you live out in the boonies).

Another thing, are you gonna look at gun storage? Thinks like "Should I get a safe" (yes), "which safe", "how do I store my guns until then" etc. Basically, how to own guns without getting shot with your own gun.

Hmm. You should get a safe, but also I should get a safe, haha. My guns are in their cases in a secure location. It takes up a fair amount of space.

If there were a break in or a fire and no one was home, I might be in trouble, Having a safe has other benefits too I reckon. Maybe you can leave a little safe guide to follow up on this.

If you break into my house, you better hope I'm home. I'll put a bullet in your brainstem. Wife might take her time with you.

Yeah, I have decided to get a SKS instead. Since I suspect all the loophole AR clones will get banned in the next few years I think i'll stick with the old reliable.

Important notes for the sks.

If you are shooting surplus make sure you know if its corrosive and if it is clean the gun immediately after shooting. Wash the bore out with water first.

Second the sks has a free-floating firing pin so it free to move when the bolt closes. With millitary ammo that has hard primers this isn't a problem but with commercial ammo closing the bolt might provide enough energy to the firing pin to indent the primer. If you fully loaded the magazine all 10 rounds would go off as soon as the bolt closes. It's best practice to only load 1 or 2 rounds the first time you try a new kind of ammo.
