Courtney Love could never play or compose. What she was good at is convincing musicians with skill to do things for her and how to control them with drugs and sex. She must had had some immediate personal charm, which worked on certain people to draw them into her orbit after which she turned nasty and manipulative. People stayed around because they felt obliged somehow. In Kurt's case, she was pregnant with his (his?) daughter. This particular voice of a generation is an unfathombly odious and vile slut, and a literal glow-op, read: a narcotics informant in the West Coast drug scene. As much as I don't like Yoko, I think the comparison is hugely unfair on Yoko. Yoko could perform when she wanted to and she at least tried to preserve John's legacy by taking care of unreleased and unfinished material.

But back to Courtney, there are 2 reasons she was popular besides the sex and drugs already mentioned. She co-opted the whole Riot Grrl thing and the very first thing she did when she got any clout is sell out. Big no-no in the screeching girlpunk scene, but no-one cares. Her second album (and the second reason) was partly written by Billy Corgan and Kurt Cobain. It came out shortly after the latter's death and the feeling was that's the last of Kurt's legacy. It is admittedly a decent pop rock album with good production and Courtney's tuneless screeching kept to a minimum. She might have even learned some power chords on the guitar, so it looks like she's playing something when on stage. The reality is probably closer to this:

Fuck me, the delivery. I guess he was tired of saying the same thing for the intro in every video...but I agree with him, Yoko didn't break up the Beatles. Her presence was an irritant, but it wasn't really her fault as the lads were struggling with other issues.

Media types like Fantano hyping the fuck out of the album a black artist releases AFTER the one that was actually groundbreaking because they are terrified they might look racist is always hilarious.
He did it with TPAB, he did it with Lemonade, I'm sure he did it with whatever record was out when he got into Death Grips, his ex-wife must be one of the most out-of-touch black women in New England because this dude has never had the skinny on good shit black artists were pumping out.
