I'm going to laugh if the files finally get released and we just find out that the whole reason Trump was trying to keep them closed was that he's a huge FBI informant and just didn't want all his rich friends to know he's been ratting them out for 30+ years.

These emails are pretty well organized and nothing before this or after this was anything to do with this specific conversation. So unless any additional context is somewhere else among these 20k documents I don't know.

He is the president. He can declassify the documents and once they are declassified it's a pretty damn good incentive for the people that can subpoena to start sending some out because nobody will want to be known as defending the extremely well known pedophiles that were exposed.

I would laugh if the files said Trump was only 20 years old, but we live in reality and I think my hypothetical is just as realistic as yours. Trump is more likely to be a KGB informant than an FBI one.

I want to point out that the belief that the president can declassify whatever he wants is a myth. I'm not saying he can't declassify the Epstein files but I do not know the classification process around the Epstein files so I can't definitively say whether he can or cannot.
For example some documents are classified under federal law (think stuff like nuclear secrets) and thus the president does not have the uniform power to declassify it.
And due to separation of powers the president only has sweeping authority over information that originates from the executive branch, and does not have the power to declassify documents that were classified by a different governmental branch. Like for example say the judiciary or legistlative branch classified the files, the president has no legal authority to declassify it. There's actually an entire process to declassify documents even if they come from the same branch.

Considering we're now getting emails showing Epstein had direct ties to Obama through his former lawyer, if it really does turn out that Trump was playing coy to trick the Democrats into pushing for all this to get released, I will take back every joke I ever made about "5th dimensional chess".

But I really don't see any other way to interpret her remark. She and Obama were both in NYC that week, where Obama gave a speech at the UN about Russia annexing Crimea.

If they're part of a court case how would the president "declassify" them?
