Yeah, VF was a foretold tragedy, really. He got to dunk on scrubs for pretty long. He actually lost to a commendably adaptable Lion playing Derich (8th Dan and he dropped Phil with some effort. Phil had a good 80 matches of experience on him.) and everyone in the later matches of the stream just torn him to shreds. I like that he struggled so hard against the Chadliest of the cast, Brad Burns.
For all his complaints about the game, he's just playing it wrong. He raged at pointless shit, like crying in anger RANDOM THROW!!! when that 8 matches Sarah player used a throw punish on his scrubby ass. Most of the times he said counterhit were still wrong. He uses these huge, staggeringly slow moves with no setup then complains when the other player stuffs them, because they're actually using good neutral moves. It seemed like his whole gameplan was for the other player to put forth a "legit" match, so he could scrub under their safe highs with the elbow into sweep forever. Some of his rivals were just not fucking having it, opting instead to jump over it for huge launchers every time. Then Phil would complain about a mid-style-floaty-move. By the way, he kept spamming Shun's cartwheel kick, a mid-style-floaty-move that led to a combo for nearly 40% HP even if the last kick didn't hit, and I feel like Phil's stuff was unoptimized as usual. One of his favorite mixups was low elbow (A move that pushes away and retreats, creating a gap, though clearly leaving Shun minus) into mule kick (A REALLY short range mid launcher that would often just painfully whiff right in the opponent's face)
And to be honest his choice of Shun (I get it, he's a drunk, Phil's an alcoholic) was pretty fucking stupid. He didn't even use most of Shun's good moves, he had trouble getting that downback "quick" knockdown kick for some ungodly reason, and he completely ignored his stances and his drink system, which would be the main point of playing Shun at all. Other than that, Phil's just not creative enough to play a Drunken Master in any game. They're always this confusing offense archetype and Phil couldn't confuse anyone but Derichs who struggle to find their way out of a straight hallway. I still feel like he would have been a much happier pig holding musclebound Wolf between his gouty hands or even responsible BBC owner Jeffry. Taka would have been a legit good choice, but I think something in his head precludes him from playing fat guys. Not to mention Taka is a bit king of hatey, being an unceremonious sumo wrestler who loves to win and hates to lose. Plus, he's got an insanely dangerous, easy to keep going offense. Perfect choice for him, but he'll never even try it. I feel like his choice of Shun was half proving us wrong for the clear Wolf call, and half not liking how throws worked in VF. Choosing a character you like is always half the battle on these types of game. Even tierwhoring is actually worse than just playing something you legitimately enjoy.
Once he was out of Derich ranks, he was out for the count with no hope of recovery. Almost everyone took him apart last stream. It's a great disaster, and I heavily reccomend it. One of the few times Phil was actually entertaining.
