hey guys, i'm new here and really want to contribute because my hate for the tumblr art style and fetishization of minorities is too strong for me to just sit around and not make fun of it with like-minded people.

them backwards feet. that incredibly unrealistic tokenizing design. the binder. this is supposed to be dave from homestuck. the blonde kid with canonically caucasian features. i get that pee oh cees can dye their hair but this just combines like 5 different minorities into a single clusterfuck of a character design.

this one is almost okay but the hideous lines and art style(THOSE PUPILS...) is holding it back so hard. tumblr redraws are a great source of cringe. they basically serve to really highlight like how goddamn UGLY tumblr users interpret characters.

I actually like it when artists give characters unique eyes because it makes them stand out and usually makes their design more interesting. But after seeing tumblr do it so much I'm really, really sick of it.

Also, that character in particular already has distinct eyes. Compared to everyone else's, his are narrow, beady, and tired-looking, which fits his character. He is human; why the fuck should he have slit pupils?

Usually when a character has slits for eyes, it's either because they have a close association with snakes or it's meant to show they're very sneaky and/or dangerous. It's not a very uncommon thing in animation and it's pretty cool when it's done by someone competent, but when tumblr does it it's just dumb.

I've seen it sometimes done with youkai/not-totally-human characters, too; Nehelania from Sailor Moon and the puppy bros from Inuyasha (manga only, IIRC) have them.

I always thought it was sort of a visual cue that the general expression of the character becomes intense. Sort of like barely-contained rage in a sharp sideways stare. But then again that would be giving tumblr artists too much credit for putting more consideration into conveying subtle emotional cues over style or fandom.

I'd love to ask that artist in what way that is supposed to be Dave Strider? There isn't even background information to imply that it's Dave, for all anyone knows that's just a random black person wearing sunglasses! What is it w/ tumblr's obsession w/ taking the characters, stripping them of ever recognizable feature and then saying their random queer tranz PoC ace flux demi-womyn is actually [insult popular character from popular media here]. I know they're obsessed w/ ~*~creating repruhzentayshun uwu~*~ but it's ridiculous.

Tbf I'm pretty most depictions of the characters not drawn by Hussie himself (even in the comic) aren't quite considered canon. Even so, all evidence seems to point to all of the human characters are indeed Caucasian. It's especially funny w/ Dave and Rose they're basically both implied to be albino shut-ins for the most part.

That's correct, and I'd venture as far as saying Homestuck is the source of characters being x or y race or even gender when it came to the trolls. This 'rule' followed people out of the fandom and the next most notorious fandom it hit was Dangan Ronpa, and then so on. But yeah, people flipped shit when there were canon references to the human's skin colors, so every mention of them being pink or white skinned is currently scrambled. Although one of the characters using 'autistic' as an insult to another character stays because the fandom as a whole is cool with it.

yeah, he was HELLA white originally before Hussie pulled the pandering thing to attempt to quell the tumblr fan's rage. I haven't read the comic ever since around the caucasian censorship bit partly because i didn't like how he started to censor his own weird sense of humor to appeal to the whiners. After I checked up on the the comic they also kinda retconned Dave's funny badass Dudebro of a well, bro to be implied to be abusive and it comes the fuck outta nowhere. Cause you know, Dudebros are like the most problematic thing ever and clearly all of them are toxic scumbags. I heard from a friend this apparently spawned from Tumblr finding Dave's "sparring" hobby problematic. the thing is this retcon makes no fucking sense since pretty much all of the scenes where Dave's bro protects/helps him in a situation where an abusive guardian would have left him to fucking die are still untouched.
