<2022-10-22T05:51:08.000Z> sneedtop: I don't even want to get into the fight in the thread. Josh hates corey barnhill for his own reasons, I am not speaking of path.net or zoom or godspeed or his war to get his pedo allegations scrubbed from the farms. My insight is this, server logs list ip addresses, these ip addresses can be used to request information from a users ISP, they will give details under conditions that vary from infractions stemming from DMCA violations or based on the ISP's TOS or local regulations for "hate speech, cyberbullying, cp, etc.) The server sysop however only has the IP which is only useful for geo location. Servers however can load cookies that track and help to pinpoint users as well as possibly loading key loggers etc however this is not common or as easy as one might think I do not believe path.net could track users and reveal their identities but if they could it would be through mechanisms of this nature. If they were really the threat they are purported to be then why were Kiwi Farmers not targeted for doxxing?
<2022-10-22T05:54:21.000Z> chudbere: Good points
<2022-10-22T05:54:42.000Z> chudbere: Now from a technical aspect, I have access logs disabled on our server
<2022-10-22T05:55:04.000Z> chudbere: And we aren't a direct customer of path
<2022-10-22T05:55:23.000Z> chudbere: They provide network level filtering to all of buyvm
<2022-10-22T05:56:18.000Z> chudbere: So if they were to try to somehow look for traffic data, they would have a firehose of requests to sort through
<2022-10-22T05:57:00.000Z> chudbere: With no information on what server each request is hitting, from what I understand
<2022-10-22T06:00:09.000Z> sneedtop: just say that path.net could filter ips that access your server. they would have a list of ips that from my knowledge would be difficult to apply to actual user accounts seeing as how there is no server log to link to user accounts. It would just be a list of ips that accessed the server and times and dates that they did so.
<2022-10-22T06:01:43.000Z> chudbere: Right, and they actually would be looking at a list of IPs that accessed the protected portion of the BuyVM network
<2022-10-22T06:02:06.000Z> chudbere: I don't even think they can see what server each IP connected to
<2022-10-22T06:02:42.000Z> chudbere: Because the filtering is on a block of IP addresses at the hardware level in BuyVMs datacenters
<2022-10-22T06:03:17.000Z> sneedtop: I would think they could have destination address logs and could identify ips to the server, but not the ability to link to user accounts.
<2022-10-22T06:04:36.000Z> chudbere: Ok
<2022-10-22T06:04:41.000Z> sneedtop: That I would be inclined to believe is possible, but again an IP is only good if your ISP cooperates to divulge the account holder of said ip.
<2022-10-22T06:05:06.000Z> chudbere: BuyVM is supposed to be pro free speech
<2022-10-22T06:08:18.000Z> sneedtop: I do not think it likely, only possible. Hope it helps. If it was me, I would not drop the ddos after spending the time to enable it based on any one at the farms advice other than Josh himself and I doubt he would see it as a security vulnerability but as a matter of not supporting path.net financially which you are not doing.
<2022-10-22T06:18:25.000Z> chudbere: Right that is really my only qualm with this at the moment
<2022-10-22T06:18:36.000Z> chudbere: I'm not paying path, but buyvm is
<2022-10-22T06:18:49.000Z> chudbere: So in a roundabout way I'm supporting path
<2022-10-22T06:19:06.000Z> sneedtop: this page just reiterates what I stated https://www.whatismyip.com/can-someone-find-me-with-my-ip-address/
<2022-10-22T06:20:50.000Z> sneedtop: ddos protection is bundled via buyvm, it is offered to you you may as well use it unless you want to migrate for ethical purposes as you stated above
<2022-10-22T06:21:23.000Z> chudbere: Thank you for the link
<2022-10-22T06:22:18.000Z> chudbere: I will give it some thought. If BuyVM can't provision us an upgrade on our VPS soon I may be looking for another host entirely
<2022-10-22T06:23:33.000Z> sneedtop: if that is the case I recommend epik. I use them myself and promote them, however I do not work in VMs I deploy stacks on physical hardware I can touch. I do not know how there VM's perform. Only that they are great for what I do. Josh is now using them as well for services.
<2022-10-22T06:24:28.000Z> sneedtop: https://www.epik.com/
<2022-10-22T06:29:32.000Z> sneedtop: By the way I have a fresh nextcloud server sitting next to me. It is a clean install. https://cloud.sneed.top
<2022-10-22T06:30:38.000Z> sneedtop: it has no users and if you ever need me to add users you may use it if you ever have a need for it.
<2022-10-22T06:31:09.000Z> chudbere: Oh neat, what do you plan to use it for
<2022-10-22T06:32:58.000Z> sneedtop: well remember when you ran the poll for the guilded server? I set it up then and was going to offer it then but never really finished it.
<2022-10-22T06:36:13.000Z> sneedtop: i planned to set up a rocket chat as well and still can if you ever have a need.
<2022-10-22T06:37:10.000Z> sneedtop: I am calling it a day. Thanks for all you have accomplished here, I like it alot. Have a great evening.
<2022-10-22T06:39:56.000Z> sneedtop: Also I am closing the firewall to the sneed.top domain as there is no point in leaving an empty server running. If you ever wanna use it let me know and I will admin you and leave it up permanently or until bandwidth quotas become an isssue.
<2022-10-23T19:11:15.000Z> sneedtop: wow, the state of it all. we live in interesting times.
<2022-10-23T19:11:33.000Z> chudbere: you talking about the KF thing?
<2022-10-23T19:12:12.000Z> chudbere: and i'm sorry I somehow missed your other chats the other night
<2022-10-23T19:12:19.000Z> sneedtop: yes, things have "escalated" lol. the fallout is quite the spectacle to behold.
<2022-10-23T19:12:31.000Z> chudbere: I will definitely let you know if we can use it
<2022-10-23T19:12:52.000Z> chudbere: oh yeah, the thread apparently devolved into a trashfire while I was out shopping this morning
<2022-10-23T19:12:57.000Z> chudbere: I ended up having to mute it
<2022-10-23T19:13:38.000Z> sneedtop: yes, I have been busy with the zoo that houses me and was a bit overwhelmed on the current state of affairs
<2022-10-23T19:14:01.000Z> chudbere: Hopefully josh is able to work out a solution
<2022-10-23T19:14:24.000Z> chudbere: if he doesn't and ends up putting a dump up of the public posts, I'll grab a copy of it and host it somewhere
<2022-10-23T19:15:16.000Z> sneedtop: also, wanted to make certain that I had not done or said something that was misunderstood for want of a better way of expressing things. I can imagine you get zillions of notifications etc, so I understand. Hope that makes sense
<2022-10-23T19:16:44.000Z> chudbere: oh no, not at all
<2022-10-23T19:16:45.000Z> sneedtop: I feel the same about any potential drops, I will mirror the site as well just on principal
<2022-10-23T19:16:50.000Z> chudbere: i simply didn't see the chats
<2022-10-23T19:17:03.000Z> chudbere: Notifications are such a mess on here for me some days
<2022-10-23T19:17:08.000Z> sneedtop: understood, ok back to the zoo lol
<2022-10-23T19:17:19.000Z> chudbere: Have a great rest of your weekend
<2022-10-23T19:17:39.000Z> sneedtop: have a good afternoon etc. talk to you later. Thanks.
