sickle cell trait protects from malaria but its fine to have as long as you don’t get sickle call anaemia.
Carrying one trait doesnt actually provide immunity but rather gives you a tolerance to malaria, since the trait doesnt directly interfere with the plasmodium parasite that infects people from the mosquitos. I’m not exactly sure how it works but the blood cells produce more carbon monoxide than normal from an enzyme which somehow prevents cerebral malaria.

You can still catch malaria but you won’t develop extreme symptoms like non-tolerant patients would

I think its a strange way that we somehow develop natural defenses against a parasite like that through another disease that can also be potentially harmful to us but i guess it can be better than almost certain death when proper care isn’t available.
