octal is a bit easier to explain than hex. imagine if you counted 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, but then instead of saying 8 you went to 10. like, the second digit is no longer the 10's place, but the 8's place.

hexadecimal is like that, but with 16. so if i say my age is 25 in hex, that's 2 in the 16's place, making 32, plus 5, which comes out to 37 in decimal.
