Some organization gave out yellow paper maps that had circles marked on several locations around the boardwalk, mostly ones that are out of the way and kind of discrete, and when you went to them they'd have you listen to really strange audio narration and look at kind of twisted slides

The ambiguity lends to multiple possible meanings IMO. It could mean a person needs to not commit their affection and love toward somebody who does not commit it back, or it could mean that if a person doesn't believe in who they are that they might need to reflect and address issues before trying to be with others because if they can't be certain they love themself it might be unrealistic to expect somebody else to.
