I've found that the majority of the american-based homophobes I've encountered at this point weren't really homophobes per se, they're bigoted against the "gay" act people put on. Being pretty normal myself, but happen to be bi/pan/demi/whatever the fuck the made up term is for bi these days, I've had zero issues with the "homophobic" colleagues and customers my more... flamboyant... colleagues have dealt with. And when they found out (generally talking about spouses or whatever, I mention my husband), it's "You're gay?" "Nah, but my husband is." "Hah! Good one!" and we get on just fine. Not the case with everyone - I've had to draw on a group of rednecks - but definitly a dwindling population.
