i've been thinking about traffic lights lately, because they're no longer the simple, timed "first let the left turns go, then the people going straight" things they used to be. i was comfortable with that because even though i'm ceding control to a machine to decide when i can go... at least the *rules* are clear, and the machine's job is just to be an arbitrator, a referee, the one with the stopwatch who actually says "ok, time's elapsed".

i think what you're saying is that intersections can't be properly understood if you just look at them by themselves, you have to understand that people aren't just trying to go from intersection A, to intersection B, to intersection C, all the way to intersection P. they're actually trying to get from "home" to "work". and sometimes "home to work" goes diagonally, rather than just being strictly north and south. so rather than just synchronizing, say, "all the lights going east/west along el camino", they're now additionally synchronizing some traffic flows going in diagonal directions.

so as a counterpoint to this, my entire life has been built on Industrial automation in PLC control, my lineage and legacy is automating jobs that machines are very good at doing that humans are not, but because the incidence of human fallibility is a significant nonzero number, automated systems can only be as smart as the people who programmed them, there's a whole fucking rant that I go on with the whole self driving car "will it hit a child or kill the occupant" thought question because it shows a significant Gap in knowledge on how automated systems make decisions

i'm working (at a snail's pace) towards maybe one day having central air conditioning. but my problem is modern thermostats don't "turn on when it gets warm and turn off when it gets cold" they set up what is almost kind of a very low-frequency PWM. so really zone controllers do the wrong thing with modern thermostats, because the zone controller will turn on the compressor when "any of the zones are calling for cooling" but what you really want to do is to say, ok, zone 3 has 2 minutes worth of outstanding time that it has been asking for cooling, we need to schedule things such that zone 3 gets its 2 minutes worth.

Well that's kind of the whole bread and butter of my job right? somebody has a dodad or a gizmo that they spent years developing and prototyping and marketing etc etc, and now they need to find a way to make a hole fuck ton of them, that's where a guy like me would come in to set up a production environment that can produce at whatever ridiculous quantity you want to start filling the oceans with plastic at, most companies are starting to realize that it is more advantageous to pay the ridiculous upfront capital to have an automated, PLC controlled facility then to rely on very inconsistent and fallible people to run equipment

It's an unfortunate consequence, but I think it's very understandable within human psychology the desire to take care of people prioritized by proximity, I have no shame in admitting that I'm going to take care of my family, then my friends, then my community before I'm going to worry about starving kids on the other side of the country...
