unless you absolutely have to, you should use the same type of capacitor as the one you're replacing -- mica, electrolytic, etc have different characteristics. That said, it should be pretty easy to find a 27uf cap that isn't for motor starting which I'd prefer over a poly cap

That's what I'd expect. A shorted cap would show a low ohms value. A working cap might show some conduction when first connected but rise rapidly to infinity once the capacitor is charged enough to not "pass" DC.

you could try testing one on ohms and see if it starts low but gradually goes high, the way the other one did. if it does, then it's a capacitor. if it doesn't, then i guess it might be a broken capacitor, or it might be a resistor :-P

For the 27 you might have to find a pair or trio wired in parallel to add up (22uF + 4.7 uF for example, or 10+10+4.7 and call it close enough) - they add in parallel, or less likely a pair in series (use formula for parallel resistors for series capacitors)

I suppose it depends on what you consider better. The lower maintenance and better audio quality that comes with a quartz locked direct drive is better for listening, but belt drive tables are less expensive and easier to repair.

These days there are two reasons I still use Windows:

1. When I want to do something with my computer, I want to just do the thing. I don't want to try to do it and then spend 3 days poring over Linux web forums trying to find a way to make it work.
2. While Linux really wants to be a desktop OS, it's only playing at it. It works fine right after the install, but pretty soon the pretty GUI overlay starts to break and throw errors and next thing you know you're in config file editing hell.

there's this freakish daemon you have to run if you want WPA2 to work. something about a supplicant. and i don't know how you'd do something like inflight wifi or hotel wifi where there's a web page involved in signing up. i don't even know how that's implemented at a low level. like does it give you a provisional lease with a lease time of 5 seconds in a netblock that can't get anywhere, with a DHCP option that says "to complete registration, go here" and then you do that and then the next lease it gives you is in the real netblock?

This is another religious debate with IMHO merits to both sides. Direct drive implemented correctly is likely to have far less wow and flutter than anything but a belt-drive turntable with substantial platter mass (thinking of my brother's DUAL...), but of course motor vibrations are going to be worse when there's not an acoustical buffer like a belt between the motor and platter.

i don't know how these crypto things are set up, but i know with a brokerage account whatever you don't have invested in some different way is swept up into a money market fund or something. so you can buy, and it comes out of your money market, or you can sell, and the proceeds go back into your money market. and you can do that many times a day if you want. it's not like you're constantly transferring stuff back and forth with your actual bank account, with it taking several days for each transfer.
