<2022-06-26T13:52:39.000Z> DerSauerkraut: Hey, you okay?
<2022-07-03T17:29:37.000Z> vril_oreilly: Yo I’m good. Still in the Middle East. My server back home somehow shutdown and I can’t physically turn it back on for another week or so lol
<2022-07-03T17:30:47.000Z> vril_oreilly: Very seriously debating not continuing it though. I’ve been very happy here with very little internet access or social media
<2022-07-06T14:28:12.000Z> DerSauerkraut: Hey don't blame you there. Just glad to hear you are well.
<2022-07-06T15:13:02.000Z> DerSauerkraut: Finding anything good below the ground so far?
<2022-07-12T11:40:12.000Z> vril_oreilly: I was digging on the acropolis of the site and we were expected to find the floor of a Roman temple but instead we found some later Byzantine walls reusing the old Roman stones. What was really noteworthy was we found an entire cooking oven still in place
<2022-07-13T00:39:42.000Z> DerSauerkraut: So you were working old documents that had a gap in info? Cool to see them coming through and renovating things like that. Was it a big communal oven?
<2022-07-13T13:50:29.000Z> vril_oreilly: So this site has been being dug by my uni since the 60s and on the top of the acropolis there is the foundation of a roman building jutting out of the ground, its always been assumed it was a temple and we were digging to try and find the floor of that building.
<2022-07-13T13:51:19.000Z> vril_oreilly: Turns out that there are byzantine or early islamic buildings on top of it. The oven was a small ceramic oven about 50cm in diameter. They call them Tabun ovens in arabic.
<2022-07-13T13:51:56.000Z> vril_oreilly: It'll be a couple years before we're backl but it looks like the Roman bricks were reused and turned into some sort of kitchen space connected with other later buildings
<2022-07-13T13:52:17.000Z> vril_oreilly: There is still probably that temple floor beneath but we didnt have enough time to get down to that level
<2022-07-13T13:54:25.000Z> vril_oreilly: The comfy boy server isnt up because im in the middle of a move right now, though I doubt I'll bring it back up. Probably not really gonna do fedi anymore though. I don't really enjoy it anymore and its not great for the mental health i dont think
<2022-07-13T13:58:23.000Z> DerSauerkraut: The dig sounds like it was a good time then, was it suprising to find possibly islmaic rennovations on the roman site or did they end up having a significant presence in the area after the Byzantine fell?
<2022-07-13T14:10:42.000Z> DerSauerkraut: And yeah, can't blame ya for getting away from fedi. Still has some fun people to chat with but can deliver too much bad news all at once. Will miss chatting with you though.
<2022-07-13T17:08:19.000Z> vril_oreilly: It actually wasn't super surpising. The site is in NW Jordan so it was one of the first parts of the Byzantine Empire to fall.
<2022-07-13T17:08:34.000Z> vril_oreilly: And Ill probably still check in here occassionally to check my messages
<2022-07-13T17:31:52.000Z> DerSauerkraut: Ah
<2022-07-13T17:33:41.000Z> DerSauerkraut: I'll probably message more from shortstack then here, poast is rather a black hole lol. Still fun having random convos in threads.
