<2022-04-29T17:11:09.000Z> borzoi: So I'm not Third Reich wonk sperg, outside of how a movement comes into power the Third Reich is actually one of the least interesting topics to me personally, which is why I almost never talk about it and get annoyed when others get annoyed that I don't talk about it because they personally are wonk spergs and want more on that stuff. So I'll just say a couple of things and then I'll screencap this for others to chime in.
<2022-04-29T17:17:13.000Z> borzoi: The relationship with the Third Reich and the Vatican was tense but also complex owing to a number of factors. The first is that while National Socialism was designed to be pan-Germanic and unifying, as well as many of the top leaders coming from a Catholic background, the fact is that electorally they were not popular with Catholics. Their religious voter base was the Protestant, largely Lutheran, north. German Catholics voted for Zentrum (literally the Center party) or they were reactionaries with a tendency towards German particularism (southern nationalism, etc). A lot of this was just a continuation of the Kulturkampf, the conflict between the German state and the Catholic Church which Bismarck had been able to permanently solve during the Second Reich. So Catholic attitudes could often be cool toward National Socialism though to be clear there were also plenty who were very pro NS
<2022-04-29T17:22:32.000Z> borzoi: That conflict and tension carried through the entire Third Reich which is why you have so many debates on this topic because it isn't cut and dry. Vatican wasn't pro NS but they had a tendency to equivocate (from a liberal perspective) and certainly they helped out many leaders in it and attended to their spiritual needs. They were feet draggingly neutral many times, antagonistic at others. It had an easier time reconciling itself to authoritarian, corporatist, fascist, and integralist movements than it did with NS, especially because of the war that many of those Catholic states managed to keep themselves out of (like Spain).
<2022-04-29T17:23:48.000Z> borzoi: As for Maximilian Kolbe, that is a controversial topic due to his relationship with the Polish resistance that is usually glossed over. I have an opinion on that situation but I don't really want to get into that as it would be extremely off the cuff
