<2022-01-18T18:05:01.000Z> nozaki: Hey Serf, I enjoyed the weebnats podcast (actually the first podcast I've listened to) and wanted to know if you wouldn't mind some suggestions for material? I've had an idea for a post but it might be better as an in depth look though a podcast. I don't need to be on the episode or credited, it just seems like people like the podcast and I'd like this kind of discussion to have a wider reach.
<2022-01-18T18:07:32.000Z> nozaki: Specifically I wanted to talk about Western influence on Japanese media, and how a lot of the younger mangaka have absorbed western idea on things like transgenderism. I'm still doing research on it, but if you want to discuss it and I'm happy to contribute my research so far.
<2022-01-18T19:14:45.000Z> SerfnUSA: You should absolutely come on the show if you sink your teeth into that research and have good info to share. I don’t know that we would do a specific episode dedicated to it otherwise, but it’s definitely something that will start coming up, maybe every episode. I’ve been pondering this topic myself on the subject of isekai so when we do an isekai episode I’ll be talking about it at length then.
<2022-01-18T19:15:28.000Z> SerfnUSA: If you don’t want to come on you could also just send me a little essay and I can read it on the pod
<2022-01-18T19:44:48.000Z> nozaki: Well, my research is more on the globohomo aspect of Western influence, not the good aspect from things like Tolkien and fantasy. I think that effects video games more (Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy etc) which influence isekai in the worst way (level up! cheat skills from a goddess!) and lose many of the good elements from fantasy aside from cute elves. More second hand than a direct influence.
<2022-01-18T19:47:19.000Z> nozaki: I'll tell you what, let me get some of my thoughts and research together, and if you think it's worth discussing on air I'll be happy to join. It might take some time, but if you want to see what I have so far I'll send it over. Maybe we can collaborate on the research.
<2022-01-18T19:47:44.000Z> SerfnUSA: Sounds good
<2022-01-23T21:51:20.000Z> nozaki: Hey Serf, sorry haven't been sending you my stuff. Got wrapped up in some other stuff. Anyway, to start: mangadex.org/title/566eb93d-5958-44ca-b9d3-a8335bfead5a/sket-dance?tab=chaptersSket Dance is a great comedy that ran for years in Jump back in the late 00s. Then out of nowhere, the last arc has a tranny in it. This was actually the first time I had even heard of tranny shit, and it was in manga lol. Soured the whole series to be, when it's very solid comedy for the majority of it's run.
<2022-01-23T21:52:33.000Z> nozaki: Another series is Fire Punch, where there is a main character who says she has the mind of a man while stuck in a man's body
<2022-01-23T21:53:38.000Z> nozaki: It's interesting because Fujimoto (author of FP and Chainsaw Man) is huge westaboo, and I think his understanding of trannies comes from the west.
<2022-01-23T21:55:16.000Z> nozaki: Final example is Wonder Egg Priority, and anime from a couple seasons ago. Great animation, but then has a tranny character show up and kind of ruin everything. She even wears a jacket with the tranny colors.
<2022-01-23T21:55:35.000Z> nozaki: Ruined the show for me and I stopped watching after that.
<2022-01-23T21:58:44.000Z> nozaki: A couple of things that are of note with all of these examples is that they are all still in the "gender binary" to use the libtard term. In Japan, they do not have the same programming that there is a spectrum. I think this is because these ideas take a long time to seep into Japan. They do not consume American media very much. Even Marvel movies aren't the smash hits they are in the rest of the world. Fucking Conan of all things is sometimes number 1 at the BO.
<2022-01-23T22:02:36.000Z> nozaki: The only way for these ideas to seep into society is for famous people to endorse them on variety shows or something. Japanese autism can keep some of the worst shit at bay, but there are things in Japanese culture that aren't prefect either,
<2022-01-23T22:08:08.000Z> nozaki: For example, most countries have a value or moral that is the most respected and promoted in their society. Like in the US I think these values and ideals are liberty and self sustainability. Rugged individualism. This makes sense here, but from the outside Euros and others might think it's strange. In Japan, we might think their number one quality is conformity, but this a modern perversion of what it has been for 100s of years. Loyalty. The ideal Japanese citizen must always follow their master, teacher, etc. This flows into the modern era where a good citizen must follow their boss or manager, and why most Japanese people will not leave a company even if it sucks. The ideal is to work at the same company your whole career to demonstrate your loyalty. Many traditional stories are about the conflicts someone feels following their master if they become corrupt. Or the pain of losing their master.
<2022-01-23T22:11:31.000Z> nozaki: This ties into ideas about sexuality. Like a being a faggot isn't bad because its immoral. It's bad because your not demonstrating your loyalty to society by having a wife and kids. To your neighbors by not being a respectable member of the town. We in the US interpret it as conformity, but it really comes from loyalty to society. There is a heroicness the nips feel about stuff like this. Anyway, going back to trans.
<2022-01-23T22:19:12.000Z> nozaki: So when people have mental issues, the polite thing to do in nip society is to ignore it. They do this with not just fags but anything that doesn't fit into society. It's kind of understood that you need some release, so it's just ignored when people do things that aren't good. Like prostitution. The wife, even if she knows, doesn't talk about with her husband no matter how hurt she is by it. This is changing now due to a lot of western liberation, some of it arguable good imo. Like I think husbands and wives working things out and communicating is good. But the bad is that certain things that should be ostracized are being acknowledged like trannies.
<2022-01-23T22:21:01.000Z> nozaki: Their selfish nature of wanting society to conform to them is painted more in a western tragic light, then it would have been seen before. In the past nips just assumed (correctly) this shit is just a phase and you'll get over it. Or they were disgusted and beat trannies.
<2022-01-23T22:23:19.000Z> nozaki: Anyway sorry for all the text, I'm containing my autism to this chat as this stuff is too much textual diarrhea for the TL. If you don't want to read it its cool. I can try to make it more concise later. Just wanted to let you know where I think some of this stuff is coming from.
<2022-01-23T22:24:14.000Z> SerfnUSA: If you’re fine with it I can read it in a episode
<2022-01-23T22:24:27.000Z> nozaki: uhhh all this?
<2022-01-23T22:24:46.000Z> nozaki: it's a lot, I can format it better for you guys
<2022-03-23T10:25:21.000Z> SerfnUSA: Edelgard is the worst, most messily, least consistent, nonsensical, obnoxiously pointlessly retarded character in the entire fire emblem franchise, if you unironically like her then im sorry to say I no longer have any respect for your opinions
<2022-03-23T10:25:52.000Z> SerfnUSA: Messily written*
<2022-03-23T14:38:50.000Z> nozaki: Hey Serf, sorry. I don't honestly have any strong opinions on her, or most of 3H's story and characters. IMO your criticisms can apply to the entire game, including the gay shit. 3H is a perfect example of what happens when this bad stuff is baked in as opposed to the trannylators projecting. Most of the recent FEs are in the same boat so I my expectations are pretty low for the series now. I did like the gameplay for 3H though. This is mostly the impish side of me that saw you had a strong reaction and wanted to poke and prod at you a bit. Sorry that it went too far. I hope we can still be friends.
<2022-03-23T15:17:23.000Z> SerfnUSA: Nah I was just Mad Online you’re fine man
<2022-03-24T18:44:00.000Z> nozaki: Thanks Serf. I don't want to cause friends distress.
<2022-04-09T00:40:24.000Z> nozaki: Hey Serf I did send an email, but I'm not sure if proton mail accepts mail from strange email addresses. Let me know if you didn't get it, I can just send it via message here.
<2022-04-09T03:19:41.000Z> SerfnUSA: I got it 👍
<2022-04-09T03:38:15.000Z> nozaki: Arigatou Serf-san
<2022-05-20T08:20:52.000Z> nozaki: Serf, thank you for reading my letter. I appreciate you guys treating my thoughts well and thought you all had interesting thoughts to add (I think niprib is really funny). It was very fun to listen to the episode, even if you didn't read the ending. After listening, I would like to add something for a possible future episode.I love Shaman King (SK), literally a formative work for me as a teen. If you want to do a deep dive on this I'm 100% down. Takei owns SK now (bought from Jumpfags). He is currently working on his magnum opus, the sequel to SK with all the characters from his other manga and the kids of the main cast from the first series. Won't go into spoilers for you, but if you're down to discuss I 100% will. Let me know after you finish it. Spinoffs are hit or miss, but I've been enjoying them generally.I think it could be a good gateway for discussing religion in Japan. I think as a Christian jap I could add something interesting to the discussion. I can talk at length about religious pluralism there and the prevalence of cults. SK is kind a good window to view this subject through. The old anime isn't really that great, but the manga and all it's spinoffs are interesting.
<2022-05-21T00:05:10.000Z> SerfnUSA: Glad you liked the episode! I’d love to chat about shaman king with you on a show 100%
<2022-05-23T07:23:22.000Z> nozaki: Awesome, just give me a ballpark estimate of when you want to record, I'd like to prepare a bit. I don't know if you want to get some notes from me first regarding topics I'd like to cover or if you would prefer to go in fresh but I'm happy to do either. I think the discussion would be focused more of the manga as a jumping off point as the anime isn't that great. The new one is supposed to be a faithful adaptation, but the pacing is crazy. Like 280 chapters or something packed into 50 episodes.
<2022-05-23T11:14:11.000Z> SerfnUSA: So I’m reading shaman king as it’s being released in its most recent omnibus rerelease in English, the second to last one is out in August and the last one doesn’t have a listing yet but since it’s been every 2 months the whole time I’m guessing it’ll be released in October. This is all to say I’d rather wait to do a shaman king episode till after I finish reading it, which will be October. Now I could do it sooner if you’d prefer, I could watch the new anime (if we are waiting till October I’ll try to watch both anime before then, frankly) but What do you think?
<2022-05-23T11:57:17.000Z> nozaki: That sounds good. I would have time to watch the anime too then, I think it just ended a couple weeks ago. The original (2001?) anime is really different. Not FMA different but still odd. Think it ended before the manga did and I'm not sure who wrote it. This would be good material for me to look into before the podcast.
<2022-05-23T12:02:02.000Z> SerfnUSA: I actually own the 4kids English dub on bluray, so that’s a further level of deviation from the original
<2022-05-23T12:02:31.000Z> nozaki: lmao that
<2022-05-23T12:03:20.000Z> nozaki: 's really funny. Sorry hit enter too fast. Honestly curious about how it is. I don't think there was too much violence that needed to be censored. Maybe religious references.
<2022-05-23T12:05:08.000Z> SerfnUSA: I haven’t watched much of it yet, I think that the religious censoring is probably certain but more than censoring 4kids was all about making anime feel more like American cartoons so the changes are often much more arbitrary
<2022-05-23T12:57:47.000Z> nozaki: tbh the 4kids stuff seems nostalgic compared to the modern abominations
<2022-05-23T13:02:32.000Z> SerfnUSA: Agreed
<2022-05-23T13:02:43.000Z> SerfnUSA: It’s retarded but it’s not malicious
<2022-06-10T18:30:41.000Z> nozaki: Serfsan, I have a question for you. I'm working on a FE style game with fedi culture called fedi emblem. As a FE fan, can I get your input on some stuff sometime?
<2022-06-10T18:31:28.000Z> nozaki: I have all these ideas for the game and my improvements on the FE formula, but the people I've talked to about it have never played a game and so I need some thoughts from an FE autist.
<2022-06-10T18:32:53.000Z> SerfnUSA: Anytime. I wouldn’t want to be publicly associated with it because I was pretty active and mildly prominent in online FE communities for many years so getting into it here and now could be doxy, but I’d be happy to answer any questions.
<2022-06-10T18:33:37.000Z> nozaki: lmaooo
<2022-06-10T18:33:40.000Z> nozaki: based
<2022-06-10T18:33:58.000Z> nozaki: hold on a second, let me send you some stuff
<2022-06-10T18:46:38.000Z> nozaki attached file https://i.poastcdn.org/bfa0bd763772570d861323a90d92e2b4fba71ac35075c9dc6b0318ccdc0ed7ef.pdf
<2022-06-10T18:47:37.000Z> nozaki: Here is the original project proposal I sent Graf, he said he would back this project in some form but until I have a working demo I don't want to ask for anyhing
<2022-06-10T18:49:35.000Z> nozaki: The thing I need help with mostly is map design/win conditions and damage formula. I hate the standard kill the whole enemy army maps and want to do more interesting ideas. Anyway read when you have a minute and tell me what you think. I have a lot of things I would like some thoughts on.
<2022-06-10T18:50:59.000Z> nozaki: I was also thinking about releasing this under another alias so that no one knows I did it either, just because I'm sure there are people who don't like me and I would like them to just enjoy the game without thinking too much about who made it.
<2022-06-10T19:06:40.000Z> SerfnUSA: I’m working now the im heading straight out to visit my family for the weekend and I can’t open these files on my phone so I’ll read this and get back to you sometime early next week
<2022-06-10T19:07:25.000Z> nozaki: thanks Serf, take your time, there's no rush at all on this as I'm still working on the engine
<2022-08-30T18:11:14.000Z> SerfnUSA: Where exactly can I watch this magical hour movie?
<2022-08-30T18:21:30.000Z> nozaki: poast.tv/w/e1DFttFJAL2tnNA1EZUJRJ
<2022-09-13T14:36:28.000Z> nozaki: Speaking of terrible Modern FE games, did you ever take a look at my project proposal for fedi emblem? I'm starting to work on it again, and I could use some more brains to up with ideas on weapons, characters, skills, etc.
<2022-09-13T14:47:14.000Z> SerfnUSA: Oh yeah, briefly. I’m pretty busy these days but if you want to narrow down any specific topics you want me to brainstorm let me know.
<2022-09-13T15:05:48.000Z> nozaki: For sure thanks Serf. I'll let you know, it will probably be weapons and skills. I'll let you know in a week or so. I'm getting some contributors together and I'll ask for some specifics once they're more lined up.
<2022-09-13T15:06:39.000Z> nozaki: Also watched the trailer and felt nothing. I guess this is how my interest in new releases dies.
<2022-09-13T15:09:34.000Z> SerfnUSA: I don’t like three houses but it is clearly an attempt to be like old FE in a lot of ways, mostly surface level. I think that’s an aberration. The trend is clearly awakening to fates to heroes to engage, getting more multiversey, meta, self referential instead of novel. That’s the direction for new releases. If echoes poor sales didn’t kill remake plans then maybe remakes can still be interesting, but maybe they’ll also decide to make remakes gayer too.
<2022-09-13T15:20:22.000Z> nozaki: I would never want them to remake telius in this day and age
<2022-09-13T15:22:36.000Z> nozaki: agree with your assessment, it feels like instead of trying to create a good game of kingdoms and simple politics, they just want to make this nostalgia bait garbage and gay marriage to mask a bad game. Hate this tbh.
<2022-09-13T15:24:38.000Z> SerfnUSA: I got all my hate out on fates and three houses
<2022-09-13T15:25:01.000Z> nozaki: You're free now
<2022-09-13T15:25:32.000Z> SerfnUSA: I could play engage in a couple years if I had a boring weekend to kill and not feel anything about how gay and retarded it is.
<2022-09-13T15:26:51.000Z> nozaki: there's always emulation for when you want to, the autists on /feg/ have extensive notes on how to get games running and the game files on a site they run.
<2022-09-13T15:26:59.000Z> nozaki: no need to pay for it
<2022-09-13T15:30:30.000Z> SerfnUSA: Ill just borrow it from one of my consooomer friends. If I feel like playing it at all, which doesn’t seem super likely.
