<2022-01-09T05:32:13.000Z> ZoomerImperator: Henlo, I've just finished my submission to the history compilation piece, it's a painting reflecting the exploits of Peter Kemp in the Spanish Civil War, WWII, and after. I'm a bit of a mediocre painter at the moment but it's something

<2022-01-11T01:26:12.000Z> ZoomerImperator: Did you get it?
<2022-01-11T01:27:30.000Z> thepeoplessamizdat: Nice work brother, this is very cool! Mine Were Of Trouble was one of my favorite books of 2021. We'd absolutely like to publish it. Would you be willing to write a paragraph or two about your medium (which paints, style, method, etc) and your message (what's the piece about, etc)? If you can get it to us by the 19th we can publish it then
<2022-01-11T01:28:07.000Z> ZoomerImperator: Sure thing, sounds good
<2022-01-11T01:48:23.000Z> ZoomerImperator: I've drawn military and historical subjects my whole life but it's only been in the past year that I've tried my hand at painting them. I take some of my greatest influence from historical illustrators like Angus McBride as well as classical war artists like the Third Reich's Wolfgang Wilrich. I use designer's gouache to paint over the sketches I do, and it's a bit tricky to strike a balance between getting the outlines right and using so much pencil that it interferes with the paint. As you can also probably tell gouache is a finicky thing to paint with and I'm certainly still learning. I also tried my hand at ink drawings for some of the vignettes, which I am a bit more proud of.
<2022-01-11T01:52:47.000Z> ZoomerImperator: I chose Peter Kemp as the subject of this painting because of the cult following he has gained in dissident historical circles thanks to Mystery Grove's publishing of his wartime memoirs, and his experiences were so varied there was a lot I could do. The main figures are Kemp in his three books, with the foreground being him in his Spanish Legion uniform towards the end of "Mine Were of Trouble," immediately being him being his in a jacket and a fur hat with an SOE badge on it as he would have appeared while serving in Albania in "No Colours or Crest." Finally behind that I have Kemp looking more bedraggled in jungle style battledress as he would have appeared immediately after the end of the war in the Pacific in "Alms for Oblivion."
<2022-01-11T01:57:33.000Z> ZoomerImperator: As for the vignettes at the top we have an ink drawing of the submarine Kemp took on an aborted mission to chase a German U-boat early in his secret career in WWII. The mission failed due to a British destroyer mistakenly firing on them. Below that is a depiction of a Japanese naval officer tearfully surrendering to him after the war, which Peter described vividly in "Alms for Oblivion." At the bottom I drew a scene of Peter Kemp in early 1937 serving as in a Requete militia in the Spanish Civil War, going over the top and being led by Fr. Vincente. It is sandwiched between the insignia of the Carlists on the left and the shield of the Spanish Foreign Legion XIV Bandera that Kemp would later serve in.
<2022-01-11T01:58:56.000Z> ZoomerImperator: It was a pleasure taking part in this event for the People's Samizdat, and there's scarcely a better publication blazing paths for dissident art and writing today!
<2022-01-11T01:59:04.000Z> ZoomerImperator: Hopefully that's not too long
<2022-01-11T02:01:48.000Z> thepeoplessamizdat: That is perfect, and thank you very much for the compliments. We'll have this published on Wednesday, January 19th. Our door is always open for any other works you'd like to submit in the future!
<2022-01-11T02:04:16.000Z> ZoomerImperator: Yeah thanks! I'm working on a story for Myles' SciFi contest that I'm really excited about so look out for that too.
<2022-01-11T02:04:51.000Z> ZoomerImperator: Also feel free to fix any grammar mistakes you see in my above paragraphs
