<2023-04-21T03:50:12.000Z> john_rando: One thing I've wondered about is if SpaceX has considered any emergency landing options. I mean, the plan eventually is to have manned launches that land at the pad, but there is always the risk of some mishap at launch. I would think the most likely scenario would be a failure of the booster like what happened today, forcing the Starship to break away early and do an ocean landing. As big as Starship is, how likely would it be to survive a soft water landing and not break up or rupture a fuel tank after tipping over? As it is hollow I am sure it would float as long as it holds together. Would the force of impact when smacking the water after tip over potentially injure the crew? Also, it is my understanding that they are using the ulage gasses that pressurize the tanks for the cold gas thrusters. In zero G I am assuming that the remaining liquids in the tanks are floating blobs spread out throughout the tanks. In order for the main engines to work cold gas thrusters have to fire in order to settle the liquid in the tanks so no gas bubbles get sucked into the fuel lines. However, what is preventing some errant LOX or LNG blob from getting sucked into the intake for a cold gas thruster, causing it to spew out some precious liquid propellant instead of the gas? Or is this not really a problem with a mostly empty tank after reaching orbit? If so, what about after you start refilling propellant in orbit? Would it start becoming an issue at a certain percentage level of full?
