<2022-01-24T00:07:24.000Z> TurboNormie: How was I not already following you lol
<2022-02-16T02:10:42.000Z> TurboNormie: I've got an SNK800 series which I really like for what it is, what's a good step above that?
<2022-02-16T02:11:01.000Z> TurboNormie: Might have some "walking around money" I can throw at something decent soon
<2022-03-28T00:56:50.000Z> WashedOutGundamPilot: Sorry I forgot about this. Had a draft, but it's gone. Here are some scatterbrained thoughts: The SNK has a slight larger older brother, the SNZG. I have one, but it's a little old feeling, no hand winding or hacking, so accurately setting time to the second and gauge how far off it is becomes a pain. The new version of it has been revamped, so you could grab one for about $200. The older SNZG is a little cheaper, but unless you get it for cheap used, I think it's quite overpriced at $170 or whatever. I'm not too big into field watches, so I'm a little out of the loop on what the range has to offer. I know it's basically a reflex that everyone says hamilton khaki field. I borrowed one for a while, it was cool, but TBH it wasn't the $4 or 500 dollars cool. They had a far cry edition in titanium that was kinda nice. If I were doing something that replaced a Seiko field watch, I'd lean towards doing something like a B-UHR, but I've got a hankering for an old luftwaffe-pattern watch. I like these two iterations on the style: Steinhart 44mm B-UHR in a kind of grey, matte finish with aged indices: steinhartwatches.de/en/flieger-watch/nav-b-uhr-44-date-vintage-grey.htmlLaco made the old ones, you can get some higher end ones with kraut movements, or their cheaper ones that use Miyotas. $400 to $1500, depending on what style you want. B-UHRs are very easy to find of a thousand stripes, so you can always go for the cheap chinese versions to get about 80% of the experience anyway. I've heard good things about the "escapement time" watch, about $140.

<2022-03-28T00:58:43.000Z> WashedOutGundamPilot: I'm a sucker for the aged Erbstucks, but I don't know how 'old nazi watch' friendly your workplace is. I had a de-nazi'd russian Poljot with a nazi eagle sans swastika and a Jew coworker grilled me over it, so people do notice
<2022-03-28T00:58:55.000Z> TurboNormie: This is awesome, thank you
<2022-03-28T01:03:07.000Z> TurboNormie: I love those Steinharts

<2022-03-28T01:31:46.000Z> WashedOutGundamPilot: The khaki, titanium. More pricy than i remember. Yeesh. I didn't even touch on on the chinese seiko microbrands these days. For $140 you can buy some fun beater crap.
<2022-05-31T00:25:31.000Z> TurboNormie: Seiko Prospex Alpnist
<2022-05-31T00:25:36.000Z> TurboNormie: Am I going wrong?
<2022-05-31T00:26:20.000Z> TurboNormie: I like those smaller dials...
<2022-06-01T03:40:33.000Z> WashedOutGundamPilot: Solid pick. Very classic, IIRC the Alpinist was a big arctic explorer piece in the early days, kinda gave Rolex a run for their money as the gentleman explorer's sport watch. I've checked out the white one before, it gives me this timeless sort of vibe, which is nice in the market. Reminds me of the older Ball Railroad watches, the Rolex Oyster, and Seiko's earlier work all in one.
<2022-06-01T03:43:28.000Z> WashedOutGundamPilot: The hard choice is which dial type you go with. If it's the same alpinist I'm thinking of you can go white or black, bracelet or leather. I'd be really torn, ultimately probably going white despite the price bump. It really depends, it can hurt resale when you go for the non-base colors, but there are so many damn black watches in my collection when I have a chance to go for something different I take it. But you picked well. FWIW the smaller dial will probably be more timeless in a way. I fully expect my grandchildren to say "ugh, yeah, I got this one from grandpa and it's gigantic, I don't know why they put up with this!"
