<2022-02-15T05:47:00.000Z> Hale_Hyperborean: Hey man, I take it you play Guilty gear?
<2022-02-15T05:47:10.000Z> Hale_Hyperborean: A friend got it for me recently and wants to play it
<2022-02-15T05:47:21.000Z> Hale_Hyperborean: but I have no idea how, where do I start learning?
<2022-02-15T05:47:33.000Z> Vsolid: Yea I play a little Gear but its not my main game. Which one, Strive?
<2022-02-15T05:47:44.000Z> Vsolid: Also would this friend be Helios lol
<2022-02-15T05:49:43.000Z> Vsolid: What characters interest you?
<2022-02-15T05:51:30.000Z> Vsolid: Sol, Ky, Giovanna, and May are relatively simple (assuming we are talking strive) so those can be good beginner picks, but its always good to stick with the character you like regardless of difficulty cuz the same concepts dont apply to other characters.
<2022-02-15T05:56:59.000Z> Hale_Hyperborean: Yes its, strive
<2022-02-15T05:57:13.000Z> Hale_Hyperborean: and no, its an old friend of mine from high school
<2022-02-15T05:57:20.000Z> Vsolid: ic
<2022-02-15T05:57:26.000Z> Hale_Hyperborean: I honestly have no clue what characters to play
<2022-02-15T05:57:33.000Z> Hale_Hyperborean: I haven't even installed it yet
<2022-02-15T05:57:41.000Z> Hale_Hyperborean: I never really played fighting games
<2022-02-15T05:57:54.000Z> Vsolid: I gotchu, Strive is honestly a pretty decent place to start fighting games.
<2022-02-15T05:58:39.000Z> Hale_Hyperborean: well thats good to hear
<2022-02-15T05:59:19.000Z> Vsolid: It doesnt have too many complex systems to learn and how things work are relatively straight-forward.
<2022-02-15T06:01:36.000Z> Vsolid: Core-A has good videos on fighting game concepts and Sajam has good videos on learning how to play fighting games, but none of that is gonna matter until you have a character you wanna start with. If I were you i'd give a look over which characters are in Strive based on aesthetic first, and maybe taking into account what their playstyle is (but you likely wont really understand that when new)
<2022-02-15T06:02:07.000Z> Vsolid: There's some basic terminology to learn too
<2022-02-15T06:03:14.000Z> Vsolid: Since this is an anime fighting game, the notation system for inputs, combos, and moves we use is numpad notation https://i.poastcdn.org/b5b07169ae9a91c95b52a61d0e738074e24dbac463bb94797042bf9411401842.png
<2022-02-15T06:03:31.000Z> Vsolid: This is important and is universal across every anime fighting game
<2022-02-15T06:04:05.000Z> Vsolid: Each number correlates to a numper on a keypad. 5 is inputting nothing / standing still, 2 is crouching, 1 is crouch blocking, 6 is moving forward etc
<2022-02-15T06:05:55.000Z> Vsolid: In Guilty Gear, your buttons are gonna be P (punch), K (kick), Slash (S), Heavy Slash (HS), and Dust (D) in order. So for a dragon punch (shoryuken type move), the notation would look something like "623S", a Z motion.
<2022-02-15T06:07:16.000Z> Vsolid: If you want better, relevant, in-depth info on what Strive's characters do, here is the Dustloop wikidustloop.com/wiki/index.php?title=Guilty_Gear_-Strive-
<2022-02-15T06:08:01.000Z> Vsolid: Gives you an overview of the character, the strengths / weaknesses of them, what moves they can do, combos to learn, etc etc
<2022-02-15T06:16:56.000Z> Vsolid: Oh yea also. You will get your ass kicked a lot starting out by a lot of stuff you dont understand how to deal with. So its important to have a good mindset about that
<2022-02-15T06:18:12.000Z> Vsolid: Instead of your goal being to win you should set smaller more reasonable goals starting out. "I want to land this combo", "I want to improve my defense", etc.
<2022-02-15T06:19:37.000Z> Vsolid: You'll enjoy yourself a lot more if you can see your own progress like that, cuz if you only measure your improvement by the victory screen you'll just get mad
